The Golden State Warriors managed to salvage Kevin Durant's departure by executing a sign-and-trade for D'Angelo Russell.

While the newly minted All-Star seems like a strong return for what could have possibly been nothing but dust remaining from Durant's exit, one scout is concerned that Russell might have reached the peak of his ability already:

“I don't know if he's really that good,” an Eastern Conference scout told Ric Bucher of Bleacher Report. “Everything went right for him. I wouldn't be surprised if last season is the best one he ever has.”

The Brooklyn Nets started last season with the development of Caris LeVert, who was building off a strong 2017-18 season with the team. After LeVert's injury, Russell was tasked with taking on the scoring load as the No. 1 option, and he led the way with averages of 21 points and seven assists through the course of the season.

Russell won't have quite the same opportunities in Golden State, especially when Klay Thompson comes back, which makes his fit a questionable one under this system. The lefty shoots a lot of 3s with streaky success, and he also made a living with mid-range pull-ups while struggling to finish at the rim. Adding to the concern is his defense, which has been average at best, something that won't bode well for a team in need of defensive help.

D'Angelo Russell cashed in big with a four-year, $117 million deal, but only time will tell if he can build on his career season with the Warriors, or if he will regress now that he isn't the No. 1 option.
