The Seattle Seahawks found themselves needing to shore up some much-needed caps pace this offseason. It appears guard D.J. Fluker has become to latest casualty.

Fluker took to Twitter to announce that he has been released by the Seahawks:

“Dear 12s, I was released by the Seahawks today,” he wrote. “Couple of things: I am not upset, or hurt. This is a business and one that I’ve been in for a while. I want to thank John [Schneider] and Pete [Carroll] for their very thoughtful calls. Stay safe, be kind and I love y’all. Thank you, Seattle.”

The move to part ways with Fluker hardly comes as a surprise. Seattle was able to make a splash by taking LSU guard Damien Lewis in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. It seems the highly-touted prospect will have an opportunity to etch out an immediate starting role for himself this offseason.

The Seahawks have been aggressive, bringing in a number of undrafted free agents. Then the decision to release Fluker will help shore up about $3 million for them to work with and will only scot $500,000 toward the dead cap.

Although Lewis is poised to get his fair share of opportunities for the starting guard spot, he should still face some competition from Phil Haynes, who they took in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Haynes saw little action as a rookie after not playing a snap during the regular season only to make his debut during the 17-9 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Card.
