As expected, Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas has continued his holdout into training camp as he looks for a new deal or a way out of Seattle. However, it seems as if his holdout won’t make much of a difference to him getting the former.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Seahawks had informed Thomas and his representatives earlier this offseason that they would not address his contract situation.
Article Continues BelowImportant note, as Seahawks S Earl Thomas continues his holdout: Thomas & his reps were informed prior to offseason activities that the team was not going to address his contract, I’m told. It was specific and clear. Whether or not Thomas came in to camp has zero impact on it.
It’s unclear at this point what exactly the Seahawks’ plan is with Thomas moving forward. If they don’t intend to re-sign him to a new deal and risk losing him for nothing in free agency, it doesn’t make much sense that they also aren’t willing to lower their price in order to get some assets for him in a trade.
There’s a “belief” around the league that Thomas is willing to take his holdout into the regular season until he gets a deal or gets traded. But with the Seahawks specifically saying he won’t get a new deal, a trade appears to be the most realistic option he has to leave Seattle this year. Either way, it’s looking like a distinct possibility that Thomas has played his last game for the Seahawks.
