Washington is no longer winless in the WNBA this season. The Mystics have profoundly struggled without Elena Delle Donne, who isn't playing for the team this season as she takes a hiatus without a clear-cut point of return. However, overlooked in the midst of the Delle Donne situation was the absence of another player: Brittney Sykes, who got injured at the start of the season. Washington's offense suffered greatly without Sykes on the floor. A lot of WNBA watchers immediately identified that injury as a crusher for the Mystics, and they were right. Washington didn't win a single game without Sykes, falling to 0-12 in the standings.

Washington finally broke free of its hellish losing streak earlier this week in Atlanta against the Dream, pounding the home team by 19 in an 87-68 triumph. Guess who returned to the court for Washington? Brittney Sykes. Guess who starred for the Mystics on offense and instantly gave her team a huge lift? Yup. It was Sykes, who scored 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting — 4 of 6 on 3-pointers — with 4 assists and only 1 turnover in 14 minutes to power Washington to a blowout win.

Sykes, in just 14 minutes of playing time, provided a full game's worth of production and floor leadership for the Mystics, who looked like a completely different team. Washington has reason to believe it can begin to collect wins and dig out of the WNBA cellar.

Why The Sky Could Cover The Spread

The Sky won at Washington earlier this season, so they can obviously do so again. Chicago has beaten not just the Mystics, but also the Los Angeles Sparks and Dallas Wings, two of the other lesser teams in the WNBA. Chicago has shown that when it goes up against other teams currently not in playoff position, it usually gets the job done. The Sky are hardly an elite team, but they do win most of the time against the WNBA's lower tier.

What also has to be said here is that while Washington did undeniably look a lot better in its win over the Atlanta Dream, we have to acknowledge that the Dream look absolutely horrible. Atlanta just lost to the Indiana Fever, another bad team in the W. Washington's win over Atlanta could be much more of a commentary on how bad the Dream are than on anything the Mystics are doing right now.

Why The Mystics Could Cover The Spread

The Chicago Sky just did lose to the Atlanta Dream at home this past Saturday. If you are going to minimize the value of Washington's blowout win over Atlanta, you also have to realize that Chicago lost to that same Atlanta team at home. It's not as though Chicago has a clear argument to make against Washington. The Mystics, with Brittney Sykes on court, looked very, very different. They're getting two points on the spread. Wow. That's a real opportunity for bettors.

Final Sky-Mystics Prediction & Pick

The Mystics being a home underdog with Brittney Sykes back in the lineup against a not-very-good Chicago team feels like a real opportunity to bet on Washington and get a good price. You could also consider the Mystics on a first-quarter or first-half money line with Sykes giving this team an instant offensive boost. Washington might be undervalued by the markets here.

Final Sky-Mystics Prediction & Pick: Mystics +2
