Maya Rudolph is set to make a triumphant return to “Saturday Night Live” this fall, and her role is about to get a significant boost. As the NBC show gears up for its milestone fiftieth season, Rudolph will once again take on the role of Vice President Kamala Harris, extending her portrayal through the 2024 election, Deadline reports.

Rudolph first debuted as Harris in a 2019 “SNL” Democratic debate sketch, quickly earning acclaim for her spot-on impression. Her performance became a fan favorite, leading to an Emmy win for Outstanding Guest Comedy Performance in 2020. Rudolph’s Harris also became a meme sensation, a testament to her magnetic and humorous take on the Vice President. Her impressive run on “SNL” continued with another Emmy win in 2021 for her hosting gig.

The decision to bring Rudolph back was influenced by President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would not seek a second term and his endorsement of Harris as the Democratic nominee. With Biden stepping aside, “SNL” producers saw an opportunity to have Rudolph reprise her beloved role. Although her schedule was initially uncertain, production delays on her Apple TV+ series “Loot” cleared the way for her return. “Loot” was pushed to January, making room for Rudolph to juggle her commitments between Los Angeles and New York City.

Harris is a Fan

Rudolph’s portrayal of Harris has not only delighted fans but also garnered praise from Harris herself. In a 2019 interview, Harris expressed her surprise and pleasure at being depicted on “SNL,” highlighting the unique blend of humor and respect Rudolph brought to the role. Harris even joked about hoping Rudolph would have “eight years of work” on the show, underscoring the positive reception of her portrayal.

With Rudolph back on “SNL,” viewers can look forward to a fresh take on current events and political satire, all while enjoying the sharp wit and charm that have made her impression of Kamala Harris so memorable.
