It seems Megan Rapinoe's stance on transgender athletes in women's sports missed the mark.
Former gymnastics champion Jennifer Sey said she had “to collect herself” after she heard Rapinoe's opinion on transgender athletes playing in women's sports, per OutKick's Amber Harding.
Sey believes there is a fine line between men's and women's sports that one shouldn't cross. She used the USWMT's loss to a team of 15-year-old male high school players six years ago as an example.
“An average high school boys team. They lost – the best women's soccer team in the world. There is advantage. This is not trans bigotry. This is about girls and women,” Sey emphasized.
“We have to acknowledge that biology, testosterone in and of itself, but also having gone through male puberty confers advantages. That's why we have separate categories of men's and women's sports. Denying that is denying reality,” Sey added.
Megan Rapinoe mentioned in a TIME Magazine interview last month that transgender people don't take advantage of their new gender when they play sports.
However, OutKick found evidence to the contrary. For instance, a Korean transgender cyclist participated in a women's race and emerged victorious this month.
For her part, Jennifer Sey would have none of it.
“So, I am very much in favor of protecting women's sports and giving women a fair and even playing field to compete against each other, access the educational opportunities that come from that,” Sey added.
Will Megan Rapinoe go out in style?
Megan Rapinoe's controversial statement comes on the heels of her most recent achievement as a member of the USWNT.
The 38-year-old midfielder made her 200th career appearance with the team on Friday. Rapinoe checked in as a substitute in the Americans' 3-0 win over Vietnam in the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Rapinoe will retire at the end of the 2023 NWSL season. If USWNT wins its third consecutive FIFA Women's World Cup title, she would go out in style.
