The death of George Floyd in the custody of a Minneapolis police officer has sparked ongoing protest throughout the United States. Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward is now among the notable NFL players to speak out against racial injustice and police brutality.

Cameron Heyward recently admitted during an appearance on 102.5 WDVE that he has always felt a certain sense of unease around police officers:

“My wife is white, and we have had a talk like this, and I have had to tell her ‘I don’t always feel comfortable around police officers,’ ” Cameron Heyward said. “I almost feel like I have to be to-the-book and be to-the-T. I have to make sure they know that I am not in any instance trying to make them feel threatened. I almost have to articulate even more and make sure that I want them to be safe.”

Cameron Heyward went on to describe his own run-in with the cops where a routine traffic stop resulted in three officers’ vehicles showing up at the scene after he was told to retrieve his wallet from the back of his car. For him, there have been more than enough incidents to serve as a reminder of how quickly these situations can escalate.

There is no question that Cameron Heyward's comments are indicative of how African Americans and people of color as a whole feel about those that are supposed to protect and serve. He is now doing what he can to use his platform to bring attention to the cause in an effort to spark police reform.
