Pittsburgh Steelers safety Mike Mitchell found a new way to lose a truckload of money this past weekend on the gridiron.

The NFL fined Mitchell a hefty sum of $48,620 for the late, dirty hit he delivered on Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith during last Sunday’s 19-13 win by the Steelers over the Chiefs, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported.

NFL fined Steelers’ safety Mike Mitchell $48,620 for his late hit on Chiefs QB Alex Smith, per source. He is appealing.

Smith had clearly released the ball from his hands when Mitchell came swooping into the picture, administering a low hit that could’ve left the Chiefs quarterback seriously injured (just ask Carson Palmer, as Steelers and Bengals fans will remember). It’s a totally unnecessary move by Mitchell, who also got his team charged with a 15-yard penalty following that play for roughing the passer, which could've cost them quite a bit if they weren't able to pull out the victory.

While Mitchell appeals the NFL’s decision, it’s worth noting that Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan was suspended for a game after his late hit on Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams back in Week 4. It was initially a two-game suspension, but Roger Goodell’s office reduced that to one game after an appeal by Trevathan.
