There has been a lot of movement on the upcoming The Office series — however, don't expect Steve Carell to return as Michael Scott.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of IF, directed by The Office alum John Krasinski, Carell offered a disappointing update for those hoping for Michael Scott to return. He even said that it is “off the cards.”

“I will be watching but I will not be showing up,” he told THR. “It's just a new thing and there's really no reason for my character to show up in something like that.
“But I'm excited about it, it sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea — I guess it's set in a failing newspaper company, and I worked with Domhnall Gleeson, who is one of the leads; I did The Patient with him and he's an excellent actor and a super nice guy so I think it'll be great.”
Greg Daniels and Michael Koman are co-creating the new series. The Office's follow-up series will take place in the same universe as Dunder Mifflin. However, as Carell noted, it will now follow a small newspaper instead of a paper company.
In the new film IF, Carell reunites with his co-star in The Office, John Krasinski, who wrote and directed the film. Krasinski played Jim Halpert, one of the Dunder Mifflin employees, for the entirety of its run. Ryan Reynolds, Cailey Fleming, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and more are also featured in the cast.
IF follows a young girl (played by Fleming) with the ability to see imaginary friends left behind by their kids. Her neighbor, played by Reynolds, also has this ability. Together, they try to reunite the imaginary friends with their kids.
Steve Carell on The Office

From 2005-11, Carell played Michael Scott on NBC's The Office. The series was created by Greg Daniels and is a US adaptation of the BBC series of the same name created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.
The US series depicted the daily lives of employees at Dunder Mifflin, a paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Michael Scott was the manager of the Scranton branch.
In Season 7, it was time for Carell's time to come to an end with the show. Michael Scott ends up leaving Dunder Mifflin after restarting his romance with Holly (Amy Ryan).
The Office would continue, though. Two more seasons aired before the series came to an end on May 16, 2013. In a surprising twist, Carell did appear in the series finale, which chronicled Dwight's (Rainn Wilson) wedding. Michael Scott shows up as the two share a heartwarming moment.
Outside of The Office, Steve Carell is known for his roles in the Anchorman and Despicable Me series, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Evan Almighty, and Get Smart.
He also starred in films such as Knocked Up, Date Night, Foxcatcher, The Big Short, Beautiful Boy, Welcome to Marwen, Vice, and Asteroid City.
Additionally, Carell starred in Angie Tribeca from 2016-18. He also co-created the series and executive produced the series in addition to writing and directing the pilot. His other TV credits include The Morning Show, Space Force, and The Patient.
