If teams are looking to add a surefire future Hall of Famer to their roster, they have a chance to do it now after the Houston Texans released punter Shane Lechler, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

The punter job in Houston now belongs to undrafted rookie Trevor Daniel, who came out on top of the position battle with Lechler in training camp. For those who have seen the competition play out in practice, the news of Daniel’s selection as the team’s starting punter should not come as a surprise at all, as the 23-year-old Tennessee product has been consistently showing up in the preseason.

Against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, Daniel had a net average of 40.8 yards in four punts, which was better than Lechler’s 38,0 across five punts.

Following the contest, Lechler had nothing but good things to say about Daniel and his battle with the rookie this offseason per McClain’s article on the Houston Chronicle.

“It's been a good battle, a fun battle,” he said. “I'd say this is the first real competition I've had. This kid (Daniel) is real talented, and he works hard. I've had some guys (competing for his job) who didn't.

Despite getting cut, Lechler does not seem to have any plans of calling it a career just yet.

“Right now, I'm dug in after all the work I put in. I'm going to play in as long as I can. I've still got something in the tank. It (career) has been a straight-up blessing, but I'm missing some jewelry (a Super Bowl ring). That's the only thing I'm chasing now.”

Lechler began his NFL career in 2000 when the Oakland Raiders selected him in the fifth round of that year’s draft.
