Jalen Ramsey isn’t the only one who believes Deshaun Watson is capable of winning MVP sooner rather than later. Former MVP and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Theismann is also firmly on the Watson bandwagon and believes the Texans QB can win the award this year.

“I think he has a chance to be MVP of the league this year,” former quarterback Joe Theismann said in a telephone interview per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. “I thought he was off to a terrific start last year. He has a rare combination of athleticism and ability to work from the pocket.”

Theismann then compared Watson to another former MVP — Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton — and suggested that Watson was the superior quarterback.

“He's more accurate than Cam Newton, faster than Cam Newton, more elusive than Cam Newton.”

Of course, the big attribute where Newton undoubtedly has the significant edge over Watson is health. While the Panthers QB has proven to be incredibly durable over the course of his career, Watson has not. The Texans QB was able to make just six starts as a rookie last season due to a torn ACL, the second he’s suffered in his football career.

Watson certainly showed his immense potential during that small sample size, though. He threw 19 touchdown passes in those six starts, which put him on pace for over 40 TDs over a full season.

If he can stay healthy for a full season or close to it, then there’s every chance he will be a top contender for the award as Theismann predicts. But considering his checkered injury history, that remains one big “if.”
