In a surprising turn of events, the No. 5 Texas women’s basketball team claimed a decisive 97-52 victory over Jackson State on Wednesday night, despite the absence of their junior point guard, Rori Harmon. The team was already coping with the loss of senior forward Taylor Jones due to a hip injury, but Harmon’s unexpected absence raised concerns.

Longhorns coach Vic Schaefer, while celebrating the win, was reserved about Harmon’s condition. “We’ll have something for you tomorrow. I promise,” he said post-game, via Danny Davis of the Austin American-Statesmen. Reports from The Associated Press noted that Harmon was observed walking with a limp at the Moody Center before the game.

Harmon’s absence is notable given her remarkable performance this season. ESPN recently ranked her as the No. 6 player in the country. She boasts an average of 14.1 points and 7.8 assists over the first 12 games, ranking fifth in assists among Division I players. Furthermore, her assist-to-turnover ratio of 6.64 is currently the highest in the nation.

UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma praised Harmon in December, saying, “I think she’s the best player we’ve played against so far this year, by far.”

With Harmon potentially missing more games, freshman forward Madison Booker might see increased time as point guard. Booker showed promise with nine assists in Wednesday’s game. Senior Shaylee Gonzales and freshman Gisella Maul are also viable options for the position.

The Longhorns’ next challenge is the Big 12 opener against No. 10 Baylor (11-0) on Saturday. As Texas continues its impressive 13-0 run, all eyes will be on how they adjust their strategy in the absence of their key players, especially Harmon, whose injury remains shrouded in mystery.
