The Patriots received a reality check against the Baltimore Ravens where they suffered their first loss of the season and allowed 37 points. Despite their performance in that game, the Patriots still rank first in the league in total defense. They are currently second allowing 150.2 passing yards per game. They also lead the league with 19 interceptions. This is a defense that has feasted on opposing offenses but received criticism for their easy schedule.
The Eagles will be the Patriots second straight difficult opponent. The outcome will largely depend on how Carson Wentz fairs against the Patriots' secondary.
These are the kind of games where quarterbacks earn their money. Wentz has a chance to earn his $66 million guaranteed if he can perform against the Patriots.
Wentz has thrown 15 touchdowns this season and just four interceptions. In nine games this season, he has four under 200 yards passing. In those four games, the Eagles are 3-1. The running game led by rookie Miles Sanders and Jordan Howard has taken pressure off Wentz. That will have to continue if the Eagles want a win in Week 11.
When these two teams hit the field, turnovers will be the key. The Patriots are a defense that likes to cause turnovers. Wentz has turned the ball over six times in nine games this season. To limit them this week, Wentz will need to find his stars and not force the ball.
Sanders will need to be active in the screen game. Alshon Jeffrey has to make his presence felt against one of the best corners in the league in Stephon Gilmore. The ultimate key might be Zach Ertz. The Eagles' tight end was not only one of the best tight ends in 2018, but he was one of the best pass-catchers overall in the league. He has not seen the same success this season with just 46 catches and two touchdowns.
To win in the NFL, quarterback play must be superb. To take down a team like the Patriots, it must be almost flawless.
Wentz and the Eagles can make a huge statement if they come out and win this game on Sunday.
