David Leitch's The Fall Guy will allegedly hit digital streaming platforms on May 21. This is shocking for the Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt-led Universal film, which debuted in theaters less than three weeks ago.

It's being reported that The Fall Guy is hitting digital streaming platforms on May 21. It is great news for those who missed the film in theaters. However, it sets a troubling precedent for other upcoming theatrical releases.

Universal releasing The Fall Guy on digital platforms so soon is interesting. Of course, they were probably hoping for greater box office success. This opens up the film to wider audiences as viewers can watch it from the comfort of their own homes.

However, it will be extremely troubling if a tentpole film like Inside Out 2 or Deadpool and Wolverine has to take this approach.

To date, The Fall Guy has grossed $127.5 million worldwide. This is after debuting to $27.7 million domestically (which was even less than Leitch's last film, Bullet Train, which grossed $30 million its opening weekend). During its second weekend, the film suffered a 50.6% drop, grossing $13,699,600.

Overall, after 17 days in theaters, the film has made just under $63 million domestically. That is certainly disappointing for Universal. They were likely hoping that the star power of Gosling and Blunt, who starred in two of 2023's biggest films (Barbie and Oppenheimer) would carry them to box office success.

At least The Fall Guy's Digital release will feature benefits for those who purchase it. The film costs $29.99 to purchase on Apple TV (it is not currently available to rent). Collider's report on the news reveals that there will be an extended cut that features 20 more minutes of the film.

The Fall Guy is loosely based on the TV series of the same name from the eighties. It follows a stuntman, Colt Seavers (Gosling), who nearly loses his career after a dramatic set accident. Sometime later, he reunites with his ex-girlfriend, played by Blunt, who is in production on her directorial debut.

However, Colt finds himself wrapped up in a conspiracy that involves the film's star, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Winston Duke, Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, and Stephanie Hsu also star in the film.

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt star in the film. They are both fresh off of Oscar-nominated performances. Gosling received a Best Supporting nod for his performance as Ken in Greta Gerwig's Barbie. Blunt received her first career Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Oppenheimer.

David Leitch directed the film based on a script by Drew Pearce. The two previously collaborated on Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw. They both produced the film as well.

After starting his career as a stunt double, Leitch has made a name for himself as an action director. He made his directorial debut co-directing John Wick with Chad Stahelski. He subsequently directed Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs and Shaw, and Bullet Train.

The Fall Guy held its world premiere at the 2024 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival on March 12, 2024. It was subsequently released in theaters on May 3 by Universal.

The Fall Guy will be released on digital platforms on May 21.
