Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Josh Giddey continues to turn heads in the NBA with his all-around game. He entered the league with little fanfare compared to other newcomers, but he's clearly making his name known.
On Sunday against the Dallas Mavericks, the 19-year-old Thunder guard tallied his first triple-double and became the youngest player in NBA history to do so, surpassing Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball by three months. Giddey also became the youngest player in NBA history to lead a team in points, rebounds, and assists in a game, doing it in front of the guy he usurped in Mavericks star Luka Doncic (via ESPN Statistics & Information).
Although the Thunder dropped a 95-86 decision to the Mavericks, Giddey was clearly proud of his memorable performance of 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 14 assists.
Giddey was selected by the Thunder as the sixth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Not many were familiar with the versatile guard who honed his wares in Australia, playing for the Adelaide 36ers. But with the way he's been performing, it won't be long until more fans will be aware of him.
Giddey is averaging impressive across-the-board numbers of 11.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 1.0 steals. While his physique and strength need improvement, he has truly showcased his high basketball IQ. His pairing with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the Thunder backcourt will be a headache for opponents in the years to come.
The Thunder have a few days off before taking on the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday.
