To the huge relief of many, Tiger Woods is now in stable condition and on the road to a full recovery after being involved in a serious car crash in Los Angeles, California early Tuesday.

Woods quickly underwent surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center to treat the fractures he suffered in his lower right leg and right ankle.

After the long procedure, the Tiger Woods Foundation said in a statement that the golf legend is now recuperating and now needs more private time.

“He is currently awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room. Thank you to the wonderful doctors and hospital staff at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, the Los Angeles Country Sherrif's Department, and the Fire Department. Your support and assistance have been outstanding.”

The 45-year-old Woods was driving his SUV at Rancho Palos Verdes around 7 am when he went across two lanes of road before hitting a tree. He was “lucid and calm” according to police officers who first arrived at the scene, adding the SUV's airbags and seatbelts may have saved Woods' life.

Woods, who received a message of support from former US President Barack Obama, wasn't given a sobriety test given the seriousness of his injuries. The cause of the car crash remains unclear.

The 15-time major champion and 82-time PGA Tour winner last played competitive golf at the rescheduled Masters in November, where Woods failed to defend his crown as he finished outside the top 10. He also suited up in a father-and-son tournament in Florida last December.

Tiger Woods had a similar incident in November 2009 in Martin, Florida, when the SUV he was driving crashed into a fire hydrant and a tree, causing him to suffer facial lacerations. He dismissed it as a “private matter” but was later on revealed to be connected with an infidelity issue.
