The Detroit Tigers made a shocking decision to non-tender Matthew Boyd for the 2022 season. He pitched for them for seven seasons.

Jon Morosi, of MLB Network, had some strong words for the ex-Detroit pitcher,

“Boyd is one of the most gracious and thoughtful people I’ve met in life. In a baseball context, I always describe him as a future Roberto Clemente Award winner. Detroit is better because of you”

It's a surprising move that Detroit decided not to tender him. Any team could use a starting pitcher who can be serviceable from anywhere from the two to the five spot in a rotation.

It's going to be interesting to see what the Tigers do with the remaining portion of the offseason. They have already gone out and signed Javier Baez to a massive contract. Detroit also has some other guys who could potentially make their debut next season. They have one of the better farm systems in all of baseball, so expect some new faces in the clubhouse. They also have young guys like Casey Mize and Akil Baddoo who have shown some potential of what they can do in the big leagues.

Now that Matthew Boyd is a free agent, it will be interesting to see what team picks him up. He would fit well with a team like the New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, or the Los Angeles Angels. If any of these three teams can add him, as well as most other teams in the MLB, they will be a better ball club.
