The Minnesota Timberwolves are in a good position right now. The Jimmy Butler-led squad is now 29-17 so far in the season. Only the Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, and San Antonio Spurs have better records in the West.

This winning position is heavily influenced by the acquisition of Butler, who is averaging 21.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game.

But the Timberwolves are not a perfect team. They just lost to the Orlando Magic Tuesday night. What makes the loss worse is the fact that the Magic are 12-31 for the season before the game — one of the worst records in the league.

According to an ESPN report, Butler had something to say on the matter:

“They played better than us. They played harder than we did. They did everything right. We didn't play the way we were supposed to and they whipped out butts. I'm happy.”

Praising the Magic was understandable, but why did Butler say that he was happy?

The Timberwolves had won 12 of their last 15 games, significantly improving their position in the West. For Butler, the loss to the Magic looked like a call back to Earth.

“We need to humble our damn selves. I'm glad we lost. Came in here on our high horse, thinking we're a really good team, and we haven't done anything yet. Good for us, man.”

It looks like this loss to the Magic will help the Timberwolves' young roster mature more when it comes to playing the game and respecting opponents. These lessons will be extremely valuable as they position themselves for a deep playoff run.
