The thought for most of the offseason was that the Tennessee Titans brought in Ryan Tannehill to be Marcus Mariota's backup, but it turns out that might not actually be the case. Mariota looked good in the teams second preseason game; however, leading up to that game he had not done anything to prove that he should be the starter.
Dianna Russini suggested on ESPN's Get Up that the team might have actually signed Tannehill to give Mariota competition to be a starter, rather than just to pick him up. According to Russini, some coaches might actually prefer Tannehill and he is very comfortable with the offense because he ran something similar in Miami.
Mariota is on the last year of his rookie deal and there have been no indications that the team wants to sign him to a long-term deal.
Tannehill is also on a one-year deal with the Titans, so they should be going with whatever guy gives them the best chance to win.
There really has not been much talk of a quarterback controversy with the Titans but it seems maybe there is one, but it is out of the media's eye.
Should Mariota win the starting job, there is no doubt going to be pressure for him to perform well early. However, if he does not perform well, Tannehill is going to be right on his heels and there could be a quarterback change early in the season. If Mariota wants to win or keep the job it is all in his hands to have success in the next few weeks.
