The Tennessee Titans made an interesting move for their future at the NFL Draft in April, selecting Liberty quarterback Malik Willis in the third round with incumbent Ryan Tannehill on the roster. Tannehill, who reportedly wasn't informed of the pick by the team, told reporters that it “isn't his job to mentor Willis.” The comment drew the ire of many, including Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner.

Immediately after the comments went viral, Tannehill said he reached out to Willis. The two Titans quarterbacks “chopped it up” in the words of Willis, with the rookie saying that Tannehill is a “good dude.” With OTAs underway, Tannehill was asked about the comments once again- and the Titans quarterback revealed something else he said to Willis, as reported by John Glennon of Sports Illustrated.

Tannehill said that he told Willis he would be a “great teammate to him.” While the rookie likely already knew that, judging by their interactions with each other after the comment, it's still nice for the veteran signal-caller to make that fact known.

No one would blame Tannehill, who threw 14 interceptions- his most since joining Tennessee- in 2021, for feeling threatened by the Titans' selection of Willis. However, it seems like the veteran quarterback was just attempting to make sure people knew it was still his team.

Of course, Tannehill will be a good teammate to Willis, but he's just not ready to concede that starting job to the rookie. As long as he and Tannehill continue to get along just fine, then it's a non-issue.
