Things are starting to look very, very grim in Tokyo ahead of the Summer Olympics. Per CBC, the Japanese capital reported the highest number of daily COVID-19 cases on Wednesday since January, with 1,149 new infections throughout Tokyo.

This is definitely very concerning as thousands of athletes make their way to Tokyo in the next week and a half. The Olympics already announced there will be no fans allowed at any events and Japan also issued a state of emergency in Tokyo last week.

The surge in cases was always expected though because of seasonal factors and the spread of variants, particularly the Delta. To make matters worse, only 31% of the population in Japan has actually been vaccinated. Over 30% of the current cases are linked to the Delta variant, too. The Olympics are always a thrilling ride and after already postponing them from last summer, it should be exciting once again. But, the athletes need to be extra careful as they head into a COVID-19 hotbed like Tokyo.

As of Wednesday, there have now been over 15,000 deaths in Japan and over 820,000 positive cases. It's going to be very interesting to see how these Tokyo Olympics play out but the atmosphere will definitely feel different without any spectators cheering on these talented athletes.
