Among the teams with notable quarterback situations following the 2017 NFL season were the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins. Now it seems both teams have killed two birds with one stone after making the first blockbuster trade of the offseason.

The Chiefs have officially traded quarterback Alex Smith to the Redskins. Needless to say, Twitter has been flooded with mixed  reactions from fans throughout the league:

There is good reason for fans to be optimistic given the early consensus.

There was plenty of speculation surrounding Smith's future with the Chiefs after yet another early exit from the postseason. He got off to a spectacular start in the 2017 NFL season before ultimately stumbling to a 10-6 record. Smith even managed to help win the division en route to his third Pro Bowl selection.

However, it seems the Chiefs are now ready to hand the keys to quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The writing may have been on the wall no matter what Smith did this season after Kansas City took Mahomes with the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. The rookie threw for just 284 yards and an interception in his lone debut albeit against a formidable Denver Broncos defense.

Meanwhile, Washington has finally addressed their quarterback situation by essentially letting quarterback Kirk Cousins walk in free agency. There was optimism from both sides that a deal would be done, however, it seems Cousins' asking price may have been a bit too high for the team's liking. That said, Alex Smith will now have what may likely be his last opportunity at a serious championship run.
