UEFA has indefinitely suspended operations for the Champions League, Europa League, and Euro 2020 qualifying playoffs on Wednesday, considering the lasting effects of the coronavirus pandemic, according to ESPN.

UEFA and their 55 associates met two weeks ago, hoping there would be enough time to complete all games by June 30, when player contracts are slated to expire. Upon suspending the Euro 2020 competition more than two weeks ago, the committee had no choice but to halt any plans of resuming competition.

FIFA already greased the wheels on a process that would see player contracts extended until the last day of the season, whenever teams are allowed to resume play. UEFA also postponed notice deadlines for admission until further notice. President Aleksander Ceferin warned this past weekend that this UEFA season could be “lost” if teams can't resume play by the end of June.

This coronavirus crisis has led every country in Europe except Belarus to put a temporary halt to their respective soccer leagues.

Teams like Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig and Atalanta had already punched tickets to the quarterfinals. UEFA still awaits four more to round out the final eight that will take place in the competition.

Manchester City vs. Real Madrid, Juventus vs. Lyon, Barcelona vs. Napoli and Bayern Munich vs. Chelsea have yet to complete the second leg of their respective matchups. Those blockbuster games could take a while to hit the TV set, so long as the pandemic continues.
