It was announced this week that Colby Covington will be taking on Jorge Masvidal in the main event of UFC 272. Many fighters have given their takes on the fight including light heavyweight title contender, Anthony Smith.
Anthony Smith has proven to be an excellent analyst in the UFC and is good at analyzing matchups. He offered his prediction for Colby Covington vs Jorge Masvidal in an interview with James Lynch for MiddleEasy.
Article Continues BelowColby Covington is almost a mirror of Kamaru Usman, he really is,” Smith said. “He’s not quite as good a striker, he’s not as clean or technical or powerful. I think his cardio is probably better than Usman’s, his pace is higher, his output is higher.
“I don’t see anything in the Usman Masvidal fight that leads me to believe that Colby Covington won’t win that fight,” Smith continued on the UFC 272 fight. “That’s an unpopular opinion but like him or hate him, Colby Covington, the guy can fight…Masvidal has historically not done well with high-level, high-paced wrestlers. So big Masvidal fan, but I don’t like the matchup for him.”
It seems like Anthony Smith agrees with many people in picking Covington to get the win at UFC 272. The welterweight is heavily favored due to his excellent cardio and pressure-based wrestling style.
Jorge Masvidal vs Colby Covington has been in the works for a long time as the two famously went from friends to enemies. UFC 272 is a rare event to not feature a title fight as the pay-per-view headliner as has been the norm in the past.
