Israel Adesanya beat Robert Whittaker by unanimous decision at UFC 271 last week. The fight was very close and some have said that they thought the Australian won the fight.

The only rounds that were clear in the fight at UFC 271 were rounds 1 and 5. Israel Adesanya won the first round and Robert Whittaker won the fifth round. The other three rounds were very close and some thought it was difficult to score.

The UFC middleweight champion was asked about Robert Whittaker claiming he won the fight. Israel Adesanya addressed those claims on The MMA Hour Wednesday.

“I know I won the fight,” the UFC middleweight champion said. “I’m not blown away. I’ve said this, he and Vettori are sipping the same wine that Costa was sipping. The fact that they thought — I’ve not watched the fight yet. I will watch the fight soon but normally when it’s a performance like I expected I watch it almost straight away but I’m kinda like, ‘meh.’ I did well early on, and then later on I wasn't able to find what I was looking for and I wish I had trusted my instinct more. The first fight I trusted my instinct and I just went with the flow. I called an audible, we stepped away from the game plan.”

A trilogy bout between Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya currently seems very unlikely considering the champion is now 2-0 against the Australian. It will be interesting to see what direction both men go in after they book their next few fights.
