Islam Makhachev showed his dominance at UFC 294 where he dominated a familiar foe who gave him the hardest fight of his career not that long ago. He came in there with a mission to put away Alexander Volkanovski and that is exactly what he did in the opening minutes of the fight. Makhachev was able to land a perfectly timed head kick that sent shockwaves around the world as everyone watched the No. 2 pound-for-pound best fighter get knocked out for the first time in his UFC career.
After their first encounter which had many conflicting opinions on who won the fight, the pound-for-rankings stayed the same with Alexander Volkanovski staying put at No. 2 while Islam Makhachev held onto the No. 3 pound-for-pound spot. Now that the dust has settled, the new pound-for-pound rankings have finally come in.

This has left a ton of criticism for those who make up the rankings which is the media that cover this sport. They still have Jon Jones as the pound-for-pound No. 1 fighter in the UFC even with only one win in the last three years. Fans took to ‘X' former known as Twitter to vent their frustration.

this is BS
Islam beat p4p number 1… twice in 1 year.. and he cant be number 1???

Makhachev is the only fighter who beat no 1, no 2 and no 3 P4P all in 12 months! And they still denied him the number 1 P4P spot. What an absolute joke!

Man it’s really sour that jones Beats 1 dimensional ciryl gane within the last three years but islam has three wins over top 5 p4p fighters IN ONE YEAR…. And he’s number 2. To an extent this is just a popularity contest and it’s sad

Islam Makhachev is looking to go down as one of the greatest fighters let alone the greatest lightweights in the history of the UFC. In his next fight, he will be attempting to tie to most title defenses (3) in lightweight history which is held by his longtime training partner Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, as long as Jon Jones remains in the UFC and is not dethroned as the heavyweight champion, Islam Makhachev will always stay at No. 2 in the pound-for-pound rankings.
