There has been a lot of talk lately about Kamaru Usman crossing over into the boxing world and facing Canelo Alvarez. UFC President Dana White recently spoke out on the subject after not addressing it for months.
Dana White is an important person in order to make the boxing match as he would act as Kamaru Usman's promoter. The UFC President would have to work with Canelo Alvarez and Eddie Hearn if he was interested. That doesn't appear to be the case though…
“I think that [Usman's] serious about it —he shouldn’t be serious about it,” White told Sky Sports. “I don’t like that fight at all.”
“Everything about it is horrible. Usman is not a boxer. Canelo is probably the best guy out there right now. It’s a stupid fight that makes no sense.”
The UFC President doesn't see the appeal in the boxing matches between UFC champions and boxing world champions. The skill gap between MMA and boxing would be very apparent.
“I don’t even know how many people would be interested in seeing that,” White added. “It’s like when Conor [McGregor] and Floyd [Mayweather] fought, it sort of took on a life of its own.
“They talk about Tyson Fury and Francis [Ngannou], too. What do you think’s going to happen in those fights? Those guys are the best in the world at boxing.”
Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather was a very successful boxing match but Dana White was surprised by the success of the event. The UFC President started to feel the pressure and realized there was enough interest to make it happen.
“It’s a fight that took on a life of its own,” White said. “Everywhere I went, people asked me if those two are going to fight and it just kept building and building and building.
“Finally it got to the point where I was like this is big and I was right. It ended up being the biggest pay-per-view ever.”
Dana White shut down the idea of Kamaru Usman vs Canelo Alvarez but admits there could be something that comes along in the future. The UFC President is getting tired of the talk though.
“Who knows,” White said. “Something could come along down the line but the whole boxing versus MMA thing is silly.”
