Last January, longtime collegiate tactician Urban Meyer decided to come out of retirement and fill the vacated position as the new head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Through their first four games, Meyer is already in for a rude awakening as his journey in the NFL has gotten off to a rough start thus far. And now, we have the already infamous Urban Meyer video (more on that shortly).

Certainly enough, this is not the start that he had envisioned for his team and he might already be regretting his decision to move up to the pro league. Frankly speaking, Meyer is not a man who is used to losing as he previously enjoyed success in the collegiate ranks after handling a handful of Division 1 programs.

Meyers had the biggest break of his career when he served as the head coach of the Florida Gators from 2005 to 2010. He steered the program to two national titles in 2006 and 2008 that featured the likes of Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, and the controversial Aaron Hernandez, among a few other notable names on the roster.

After his stint with the Gators was filled with controversy, Meyers then found himself back in his home state to lead the Ohio State Buckeyes. From 2012 to 2018, the Buckeyes rose to the top of college football highlighted by a national title in 2014 as Ohio State emerged to be one of the most prestigious Division 1 programs that it is now known today.

Under his tutelage, several great talents eventually became household names in the pros including Ezekiel Elliott, Michael Thomas, and Joey Bosa. With a 187-32 career record in the amateur ranks, Meyer has certainly established himself as a true winner and is widely considered as one of the most decorated coaches to man the sidelines.

The level of success that he attained in the college football scene certainly allowed many to think that he can also do the same in the NFL. He thought so too and decided to take a leap and coach a struggling Jaguars franchise that has already been settling in the bottom of the cellar for the past few years.

Unfortunately, not even the combination of Meyer and top prospect Trevor Lawrence could bring the Jaguars back to relevance through their first few games of the season. They opened their campaign with a 37-21 loss to the Houston Texans followed by a 23-13 beating from the Denver Broncos. Their slump continued as they absorbed a 31-19 defeat at the hands of the Arizona Cardinals and narrowly lost to the Cincinnati Bengals in a 24-21 decision in Week 4.

Their winless slate seemed to have rocked Meyer and hit him hard as he was reportedly spotted having drinks at a bar in Ohio which eventually became a trending topic on Twitter, per Sports Illustrated. It is unclear when the original Urban Meyer video was taken and the reporting tweet has now been deleted as well but the swirling rumors could be indicative of his reaction towards their poor start to the season.

By this time, Urban Meyer could've already realized that the NFL is a whole different ball game and that the Jaguars had a vacancy for a reason. In the amateur ranks, the veteran tactician had the privilege of being in prestigious programs that are capable of recruiting young prospects with ease.

It is much easier to accumulate talent there than to entice free agents in the pros to come together and play for the same team. Not unless you have a big name like Tom Brady who is capable of bringing his peers and former opponents together, similar to what he did with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year.

Additionally, Jacksonville remains to be a small market team and is not known for being a winning franchise, unlike the New England Patriots and the Green Bay Packers. This makes it even harder for them to attract marquee players to suit up for the Jaguars though the arrival of both Urban Meyer and Lawrence could serve as a step in the right direction moving forward.

Through the first four games, it is safe to say that the team still lacks the talent to keep up with the better teams in the league at the moment. They do have promising pieces like Lawrence, James Robinson, and Laviska Shenault Jr. whom they can further develop for the future but their roster as a whole is certainly not capable of winning right now.

Before he accepted the job, Meyer should've already known how hard it is to turn a struggling team around in the NFL and this fact is already being proven to be true based on their performances thus far. The team still has a long way to go and Meyer should be patient with his men since it will take time before his team gets to make noise in the league. At the same time, Jacksonville fans should also temper their expectations on the Jaguars' rebuilding efforts moving forward, given that it's just the squad's first season of playing together.

It remains to be seen how the Jaguars will perform for the rest of the year but they will most likely rack up more losses in the coming weeks, given the composition and chemistry of their team as of the moment. Hopefully, they get to figure things out soon before Urban Meyer's reputation of being a winning coach gets tainted by the Jaguars' ongoing losing skid moving forward.
