After missing six games due to an ankle injury, Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry made his return to the hardwood on Friday night for a matchup with the Atlanta Hawks. Things seemed to be going well for the former Davidson standout — until the third quarter, when his teammate, JaVale McGee, accidentally bumped into his knee while attempting to block a shot. Curry (29 points on 10-18 shooting from the field) left the game and did not return.

During his post-game media availability, McGee was asked to comment on his involvement in Curry's injury, which the team is now calling an MCL sprain.

“That's the star player,” McGee said. “Of course we don't want him to be injured, especially after he came back. So I feel very bad for the fact that I was a part of (the injury).”

“You were just going for the ball, though,” a reporter noted.

“Yeah,” McGee replied. “I was trying to block the shot and I ran into him.”

McGee, who scored four points, three rebounds and one assist in Friday's game, was then asked to give his thoughts on how the game was going prior to Curry's injury.

“I feel like we had a lot of energy,” McGee said of his team. “We got off to a slow start. We definitely need to bring more energy. I feel like we did that in the third quarter.”

According to a report from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Curry, who did not speak with the media after Friday's game, is scheduled for MRI screenings on Saturday morning. McGee was asked if he's had a chance to speak with his teammate.

“Yeah, definitely,” McGee said after Friday's game. “Steph's always got high hopes, so you really can't take that. I think he has to have an MRI tomorrow. I pray to God there ain't nothing wrong with him and that he's just out a couple of games.”

The Warriors — currently the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference standings with a 54-18 overall record — will be back in action on Sunday, as they're scheduled to host the Utah Jazz inside Oracle Arena at 8:30 p.m. EST.
