The impending free agency of the Cleveland CavaliersLeBron James this summer is compelling teams to create salary cap space in the hopes that the Cavs star listens to their pitch and signs with one of them. Could the Golden State Warriors be one of those teams?

According to a recent report from ESPN’s Chris Haynes, the Warriors could meet with James when he becomes a free agent.

“Out of respect for the Warriors' winning culture, James would listen if Golden State explored ways to clear the necessary cap space, sources said.”

In what is expected to be a repeat of the summer of 2010 when James became a free agent and explored his options, the defending NBA champions could possibly get an audience with the four-time MVP. In order to make that happen, the Warriors need to work diligently to accommodate a veteran superstar of James’ stature.

Many expect James to decline the $35.6 million player option in his contract to become an unrestricted free agent. Though he can re-sign with the Cavs, this gives the three-time NBA champion another shot at a championship with a new team.

For the Warriors to be able to pry James away from the Cavs or any other team, they might have to do a sign-and-trade. ESPN's Kevin Pelton suggests that Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala could make the salaries work at the least.

“To make a sign-and-trade possible,” Haynes adds, “Golden State also would need Kevin Durant to decline his player option and take even less than his current annual salary of $25 million, in addition to moving Shaun Livingston's salary to a team with cap space. Golden State probably would have to fill out its bench with players making the league minimum.”

Though James loves the city of Cleveland, his relationship with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has been rocky and the organization as a whole leaves a lot to be desired. If there is anything that the Warriors’ franchise has that the Cavs do not, it’s a stable, structural front office and culture.

James signing with his bitter rival appears to be a stretch at this point especially if the Cavs meet the Warriors again in the NBA Finals this year. But anything is possible with LeBron whose free agency decisions are usually made just days or weeks after he becomes a free agent.
