LeBron James' game-winner against the Golden State Warriors in their play-in game killed the  Warriors' playoff chances, but it also took an unsuspecting group down too.

According to Molly Knight of The Long Game, the Warriors losing that game meant that concession workers in Chase Center would lose their healthcare benefits. (via The Long Game)

“That’s because, according to the union chief who represents them, concession workers at the Chase Center only receive health care through their jobs if they work ten games a month.

The Warriors played six scheduled regular season home games in May plus a home play-in game versus the Grizzlies to bring the total to seven. Had the Warriors beaten the Lakers they would have been guaranteed at least three more home playoff games in May.”

Who knew LeBron James could actually just take away basic human rights from people?

On a serious note, it's messed up that these concession workers have to rely on their team winning to have access to healthcare benefits. This questionable labor practice isn't just exclusive to Warriors games: San Francisco Giants concession workers also have these stipulations to their healthcare benefits. This unethical rule has led to 96.7% of Oracle Park's (where Warriors and Giants games are held) concession workers going on strike to protest for their rights.

Anand Singh, the union leader for the group, said it best:

“LeBron hitting a three shouldn’t cost people their health coverage.”

Hopefully, these workers win their war for basic compensation. Healthcare, more than ever, is an essential need for everyone, especially for workers like them who are in contact with many people everyday.
