Before his team's game agains the Portland Trail Blazers at Moda Center on Saturday, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr commended a local educator for his role in preventing a shooting on Friday at Portland's Parkrose High School.

“I read the story. It was a heroic act,” he said, per Mark Medina of the Mercury News. “We should all be thankful for the young man who came to the rescue. It's just crazy that this is becoming a routine thing for our kids. There are school shootings or near school shootings seemingly every week. Today is the one-year anniversary of the Santa Fe shooting that killed eight people. So it's very sad.”

Steve Kerr, an outspoken proponent of stricter gun control laws, went on to praise activist groups like March For Our Lives and Sandy Hook Promise for their commitment to helping curb gun violence in the United States. He then asked for the name of the heroic educator who tackled the would-be shooting suspect at Parkrose High School.

“Keanon Lowe,” Kerr repeated after a reporter said his name,” a remarkable act of courage. My hat's off to him.”

Lowe, who played wide receiver at the University of Oregon, tackled the suspect when he entered a classroom armed with a shotgun, pinning him to the ground until reinforcements arrived. A football coach at Parkrose, he also works as school security. On Saturday, after news of his heroism spread across the country, Lowe tweeted that he “didn't see any choice but to act,” saying that he “wants to be a part of the solution to school gun violence.”
