The Los Angeles Rams wasted no time bringing in their first free agent of the offseason. Eric Weddle had the Rams as his first visit since being released by the Baltimore Ravens—and immediately signed a contract.

The deal is worth up to $12.5 million over two years including $5.25 million guaranteed. This move all but confirms that Lamarcus Joyner will be on his way out of Los Angeles.

Is signing Weddle an improvement over Joyner? Yes, and Weddle will come at a cheaper price tag than Joyner will get this offseason.

Weddle brings a lot to an NFL team, even at 34 years old. Weddle is heading into his 13th season in the NFL and his third team.

In his 12 seasons, Weddle has been one of the best safeties in the NFL. He has racked up 1,067 tackles, 94 deflections, eight forced fumbles, 29 interceptions, and four touchdowns. Weddle hasn't shown any signs of slowing down since joining the Ravens in 2016. Since then, he has started in all 48 regular season games.

Also, in his three seasons with the Ravens, he collected 220 tackles, three forced fumbles, 24 deflections, 10 interceptions, and a touchdown.

In 2018, the Ravens had the number one ranked defense in the NFL. There's no doubt Weddle was a huge reason for that being possible.

Weddle also brings more than just production on the field. He is known to be an exemplary leader on and off the field wherever he has gone.

One of Weddle's former teammates in Baltimore, Tony Jefferson, stated how much Weddle meant to him.

This goes to show the respect he has earned by putting in the work in the NFL. A youthful Rams team could use someone like Weddle in the locker room. Someone who is going to hold everyone accountable while also bringing needed experience. The Super Bowl proved to be too big for a Rams team that never tasted success like that in recent years.

So what should Rams fans expect from Weddle over the next two seasons? Someone who is a hard-nosed football player and is a phenomenal leader on and off the field.

There's a certain toughness that comes from a guy who wears finger tape, a la Sean Taylor, and hits way bigger than his 5-foot-11 stature suggests.

Chad Johnson tweeted years ago about safeties who wear no gloves and finger tape instead.

That holds true for Weddle, who has made a career of not being afraid to stick his nose in any play. Those types of things are the reasons why he has been able to stick around in the NFL for so long.

You don't have a 13-14 year career in the NFL by accident. It has to be earned, year in and year out. It will be exciting to see him earn it with the Rams for the next two years.

Adding Weddle makes the Rams secondary that much scarier. Now, the Rams boast a secondary with Aqib Talib, Marcus Peters, Nickell Robey-Coleman, John Johnson, and Weddle.

Les Snead has done it once again, bringing in talent that makes the team better in the long run. It was going to be hard for Weddle to say no once he shook hands with Sean McVay.

This is just the beginning for the Rams crucial offseason. Signing Weddle was a great choice and will form a formidable duo alongside Johnson over the next two seasons.

There is only one goal for the Rams moving forward. Overcoming the hump of winning the Super Bowl and signing Weddle reiterates that.
