This year's WrestleMania 38 premium event delivered tons of fun and action. In spite of (or probably, thanks to) a lackluster buildup, WWE managed to pull off a great event for Night 1 of WrestleMania. While some unfortunate happenstance and a couple of ring rust and nerves prevented this from being an instant classic, the show was still a stupendous event that showcased a lot of talent. Here are all the WrestleMania 38 Day 1 Results with Reactions and Grades for each one.

Match 1: The Usos (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura & Rick Boogs for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship

The first match of the night is the next step in The Usos' rivalry with the Shinsuke-Rick Boogs partnership. Both teams came in with electrifying entrances, and we'd like to give both teams a shoutout for their cool-looking attires. The match started off strong with a back and forth between Shinsuke and Jimmy Uso. The champs would later turn things around, forcing Shinsuke to tag in Boogs to a loud ovation. The two Usos tried to double team him, and in what was supposed to showcase Boogs' strength, he tried to Fireman's Carry the Bloodline over his back. Unfortunately, the spot didn't end well, as Rick Boogs' knees buckled as he tried to lift the tag team champions, causing him to fall. The irony here is that Rick Boogs was feigning injury just the previous week, and he ended up having a real injury here.

Shinsuke was then forced to complete what was now a handicap match. Thankfully, Shinsuke held up on his own and the three were able to carry the match to its expected finish. While this could have had a longer run time than what actually transpired, the rest of the match flowed naturally and it felt like it didn't miss any more expected spots. The commentating of McAfee and Cole also helped play up the handicap and make the audience quickly forget about the injury. Still, everyone's efforts to downplay the injury can't easily put away the stink of a shortened match. Seeing medical personnel and trainers carrying off Boogs back to the back was an awful sight to see.

After seeing Rick Boogs playing a support role for Shinsuke in a long while, it's great to finally see WWE giving him the chance to showcase his wrestling skills. However, the unfortunate injury may have cost Boogs his shot, and it left an indelible mark on what could have been a longer and more fun match. We wish Rick Boogs a quick recovery, but his torn quadriceps might put him on the shelf all the way to Summerslam.

Match 2: Drew McIntyre vs. Happy Corbin (w/ Madcap Moss)

Madcap Moss winning the Andre the Giant Battle Royale is played up here as he accompanied Happy Corbin to the ring, in what hopefully is the last we'll see out of this rivalry. The rivalry has had some good fun, but it's starting to get stale, especially since we've seen Drew McIntyre brawl with these two psychos way too many times already. With McIntyre already putting away Moss in a previous event, this meant that he only has to beat Corbin this time, and everyone could move on. And thankfully, that's what we got from this match, with Drew finally beating Corbin after months of harassment from the two.

This match was actually fun to watch. The two had great in-ring chemistry and the match was very physical. The growing rift between Moss and Corbin helped prevent any shenanigans from happening here, allowing Drew to get a clean win over Corbin in the match. This allows not only for Corbin to head to his next rivalry, but it also leads to Moss and Corbin breaking up sooner than later. And with how WWE is pushing Moss right now, that will be the right decision for the Battle Royale winner.

Shoutout to Drew McIntyre for kicking out of the End of Days – Corbin's very well-protected finisher. This is the first time that someone kicked out from that move, and everyone sold this terrificly. Corbin's panic after this helped Drew score the victory with one giant claymore to the face. Drew cutting down the ropes at the end of the segment felt a bit anti-climactic, but it was a nice way to finally end this rivalry.

Match 3: Logan Paul & The Miz vs. Rey Mysterio & Dominik Mysterio

The Mysterios see this as an opportunity to finally put an end to The Miz's bullying and harassment. The buildup for this match was over the top, no thanks to The Miz's mic skills. The fans definitely wanted to see the father and son duo kick Logan's and Miz's asses, and they made it known with loud cheers and boos.

Even though the Logan Paul and The Miz tag team feels like a duo where two superstars were just forced to work together, The Miz and Logan looked like a real tag team here with their matching attires. The two also worked really well, chaining their moves together in the ring and working on the same body parts on their opponents. Logan also played the heel very well with cheap shots, and sly moves, even stealing the Three Amigos, the Shimmy, and The Frog Splash from Rey's best friend, the late Eddie Guerrero. He also sold really well, but his inexperience in the ring showed in some cases, like completely evading a kick by Rey early on, painful-looking suplexes, and breaking up pins way too early.

Surprisingly, this match was a great one, and this and last year's match featuring Bad Bunny are starting to change wrestling fans' minds about celebrities trying their hand on the squared circle.

At this point, The Miz should have already proven that he's one of the greats, along the top of the list like he claims he is. The fact that he has successfully carried two matches with celebrities to great results in two back-to-back WrestleManias is something that no one has ever done before, and he deserves credit for that.

His post-match turn against Logan Paul tells us that there's more to Logan in WWE than WrestleMania 38. We'll probably see the two butt heads in the following weeks. This might mean that Logan is here to stay, and that actually explains some of 2K's choices in their WWE 2K22 DLC offerings.

Match 4: Becky Lynch (c) vs. Bianca Belair for the WWE Raw Women's Championship

WWE and Becky Lynch are finally paying Bianca Belair back for what they did to her in last year's SummerSlam. WWE also treated both Superstars like proper main eventers, giving both of them special entrances.

The match started with the champion on the aggressive. Becky refused a handshake from Belair and threw her into a Manhandle Slam. Belair would kick out of a near-fall. Belair would spend the next few minutes on the defensive, with Becky ramping up her attacks, but Belair won't give in. Bianca would find a way out by reversing a submission attempt. The fight later went outside of the ring. Becky would throw Bianca against the steel steps, dislodging the upper half. This will play a role later on.

Going back to the ring, Bianca hits a beautiful 450 splash, but unfortunately couldn't keep Becky down. A botched top rope move saw Becky kicking the lights out of Belair, but thankfully, Bianca was able to go on. Becky and Bianca would trade moves, and Becky once again used Bianca's hair to her advantage, using it to drive the EST to the turnbuckle. Becky would then turn things around when she hit yet another Manhandle Slam on the exposed Steel Steps, and had it been a falls count anywhere match, she probably could have retained her title by pinning her right there and then. Instead, she tried to leave Bianca on the ground for a ten count, but Bianca came back in on the ninth count. A frustrated Becky tried to roll up Bianca, but she kicks out. She tried to hit her with her fists, but she won't stay down. Desperate, the champ tried to drag Bianca to the corner, hoping to do an Avalanche Manhandle Slam, but instead, Bianca jumps off the situation and catches Becky's back, hitting her with a KOD for the 1-2-3.

A strong outing from these two was already expected, as both Becky and Bianca have shown their in-ring acumen for years now. WWE only had to give the pair the time they need to give everyone a highly physical match. The long-term storytelling here also helped in bringing out the emotions, making Becky Lynch's frustrations for not being able to put away Bianca much more believable.

Match 5: Seth Rollins vs. Mystery Opponent

Cody Rhodes' return to WWE was the industry's worst-kept secret for a long while, but it didn't anything away from the moment when he finally made his grand entrance at WrestleMania 38. He also got a very great opponent in Seth Rollins in this outing, which allowed both stars to shine.

Rollins entered with a choir singing his theme, and he entered the ring with an elaborate coat. At this point, kayfabe-wise, Seth still doesn't know who his opponent is going to be. So, he stood there in the ring waiting for his opponent's music to hit. And he waited. And he waited. WWE helped build the anticipation up in this until Seth had to literally beg for his opponent to come out. Then out came the pyro, out came the lights, and out came the American Nightmare.

The match itself didn't have to be good to have the desired effect, but thankfully for WWE, both Cody and Rollins are great wrestlers. The two had multiple near-falls against each other as they traded signatures and finishers. Cody showed off his lineage by making a lot of homage to his father, the late Dusty Rhodes. In what could have been a disaster of a match that had very little rivalry to speak about, the match still felt significant. And thankfully, the two have had a history of working together, so chemistry wasn't that big of an issue. Perhaps it was just the nerves at first, but Cody took his time warming up in the ring. But once the match finally went underway, both wrestlers exploded.

Cody ended the match with a series of Cross Rhodes with a side dish of Bionic Elbows. He even dished out his Cody Cutter. However, WWE has to quickly find Cody new finishers, as his finisher is already overused just from his first match back in WWE. If you can't put down your opponent after a few of your Cross Rhodes, then maybe, just maybe, Cross Rhodes isn't that effective of a move. This is a shame because Cody executes it so well. It's just not protected enough.

WWE's treatment of Cody here makes him feel like a really big deal. Even if you had no idea who Cody Rhodes was, the moment would still take you in, suck you up, and make you feel invested in the match. Even though the match started out slow, the two worked a great match, and WWE gave it the right outcome. Putting over Rhodes doesn't hurt the egomaniacal Rollins a bit, but it helped in putting Rhodes on the title picture right away.

Match 6: Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Ronda Rousey for the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship

The energy in the building has admittedly been drained out after the previous match, and that was an outing that was very hard to top. So, while this match is significant in its own way, it's placed just at the right spot in the card, giving everyone a breather before another return takes place later on in the night.

Ronda and Charlotte have been butting heads for a long time now, and it honestly feels a bit stale that these two are still going at it even after Ronda left the business for a couple of years already. But thankfully, Ronda's improved so much in the ring and proved to be a worthy opponent for the Queen. Any doubts from before that Ronda is a one-trick pony (which actually played into this rivalry's story) should be gone by now, as Ronda has really expanded her moveset, which she displayed in this match.

The two worked on particular parts of each other's body, as the two wanted to make the other submit – Charlotte promising Ronda that she will make Ronda tap out for the first time in her career. The selling during the submission spots was also really great, as both made sure that the moves look legitimate, but also showed in their faces that the last thing they'd like to do was to tap out. However, there have been a couple of times where the two just didn't feel like they were on the same page, making some moves feel off-beat with one catching up with the other.

Charlotte accidentally spears the referee towards the end of the match, which allowed her to escape defeat when there was no referee to call for the bell when she tapped out to Ronda's armbar. As Ronda wakes up the ref, Charlotte kicks her with a Big Boot, and Rousey was too stunned to kick out. An earlier incident where the referee took back a three count after seeing Charlotte's foot on the rope right after makes for good in-match storytelling. This could lead to Ronda feeling cheated out by the ref, which tells us that there's more to this rivalry down the line – Charlotte still hasn't made Ronda tap out, after all.

Match 7: Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Kevin Owens in an impromptu No Hold's Barred Match

Putting this segment on the Main Event slot made it easy to guess that Stone Cold Steve Austin's “guesting” in the Kevin Owens Show would devolve into a fight. Thankfully, WWE had the great idea of turning this match into a No Hold's Barred match. This lets the two focus on brutality rather than technical capabilities, as the aging Stone Cold had to fight both ring rust and age along with his opponent, the Prized Fighter, Kevin Owens.

There were a lot of fun spots in this match, most especially the one where Kevin Owens tried to escape the match with the ATV that Austin entered the ring with, only for the ATV to be taken over by Stone Cold and have him driven up back to the ramp, where they continued their fight. Owens really helped carry the show, but Austin also started shaking off the ring rust. It seemed like every can of beer he chugged during his match washed off the rust, and towards the end, Steve Austin felt like he never left – a far cry from his form when the match started. Seeing Austin take bumps here and there caused me to wince a bit, but the old-timer took everything professionally, and towards the end, he looked fresh and back to his old self.

Owens hit Austin with a stunner of his own on the ring, but Stone Cold kicks out for a near-fall. Owens got the real deal when Austin hit him with the Stone Cold Stunner to get the pin victory. Funnily, arena security then marched into the ring to escort Kevin Owens out, while Austin celebrated in the ring with cans of beer. He even got a Stunner off on Byron Saxton, sending Corey Graves off with glee.

This match was everything it needed to be. It was like a good dessert after a great full-course meal (with a bad serving of appetizers). It's gratuitous at best, with Stone Cold and Kevin Owens fighting all around the arena. However, the entire ordeal made Owens feel a little bit weak, as he took the brunt of the bumps, and the fact that he couldn't get a proper offense against someone who hasn't wrestled in over two decades hits his credibility as a fighter. Still, even with that, we're sure that Kevin Owens is happy with the match. Who wouldn't be happy for being the one Steve Austin stuns on his last match?
