The injury happened during last week's SmackDown episode, where King Woods and New Day teammate Kofi Kingston were up against The Usos in a Street Fight. During the match, Woods jumped from the apron to execute a Tornado DDT to Jey Uso. Unfortunately, the 11-time Tag Team Champion ended up injuring his leg on the spot, tearing his Plantaris muscle under his calf. The Usos would then win the match and retain the SmackDown Tag Team Titles.

According to Woods, his doctors say that his injury will see him sidelined for 4-6 weeks, which theoretically would have him shelved for the Royal Rumble and also possibly WWE's Saudi Arabia pay-per-view in February. With Woods' injury, WWE shelved their plans for the Uso-New Day Rivalry and instead went for a #1 Contender Fatal-4-Way match in Friday's SmackDown episode, which saw the Viking Raiders winning. Meanwhile, for the New Day, their rivalry with Madcap Moss and Happy Corbin continues. As Kingston announced Woods' injury and declared himself for the Rumble, Moss and Corbin announced their intentions to do the same.
