Yankees 2 biggest needs ahead of the 2022 MLB trade deadline

Starting pitching

The Yankees starting pitching has been good this year. They own the league's third best ERA and lead MLB in WHIP. However, there are question marks.

Pitchers such as Luis Severino, Nestor Cortes, Jordan Montgomery, and Jameson Taillon are either unproven or have dealt with injury issues in the past. And that isn't a knock on any of them… but one has to wonder if they will all hold up through the postseason.

Gerrit Cole is reliable. The right-hander is enjoying another All-Star season and is the ace of this team. But acquiring another arm for the rotation would not hurt.

The last thing New York wants is to see their pitching rotation crumble down the stretch. This team has World Series or bust aspirations and pitching is the key to winning the Fall Classic. Expect the Yankees to be active towards the MLB trade deadline on the pitching market.

Outfield

Joey Gallo has been a trending name in New York for a few weeks now. The Yankees are expected to trade him ahead of the 2022 MLB trade deadline. However, they don't want to give him away for nothing. After all, they gave away some promising prospects to acquire him last season.

But is Joey Gallo the Yankees only outfield concern?

Aaron Judge is the centerpiece of this outfield. Meanwhile, Giancarlo Stanton has played outfield as well as DH this season. Aaron Hicks has looked better as of late but is not the player he once was.

New York wold benefit from adding another outfielder.

Pirates' star Bryan Reynolds seemed like a solid fit. However, Reynolds recently sustained an injury and Pittsburgh may opt to hold onto him. Another option might be Andrew Benintendi of the Royals. Benintendi is enjoying a superb season in Kansas City and is expected to be on the trade block. There have been reports that New York is interested in Andrew Benintendi as well.

Andrew Benintendi's play style would compliment the Yankees. Many of New York's hitters are big bashers who crush homers. But Benintendi is a high average guy with minimal pop. So he would help balance out the lineup. He could be considered a left-handed DJ LeMahieu. He also happens to be a terrific defender which only adds to his value.

There are plenty of other options on the market as well. The Yankees should look into acquiring an outfielder.

Final thoughts

Do the Yankees have to make a trade?

They would likely still finish with MLB's best record if they stood pat ahead of the 2022 MLB trade deadline. But adding another starting pitcher and outfielder will serve them well on their quest for a World Series championship.

Although there are very few weaknesses on this ball club, they do have needs worth addressing.
