The New York Yankees face a tall task in the AL East in 2022, as all of their rivals (with the exception of the Orioles) have loaded up during the offseason in order to push for a Division title. With Opening Day around two weeks away, manager Aaron Boone spoke on the improvements made by the team's competitors in the AL East, maintaining an optimistic outlook on the Yankees' 2022 campaign, via Jon Heyman.

“I feel like we have a chance to be great… Our hope and expectation is to be at the top of the heap come season's end, and that's what we're working toward,” Boone said via the MLB Network.

While Boone may be feeling confident, that's not exactly the word amongst Yankees fans. After seeing Trevor Story join up with the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, Yankees fans were left wondering why they weren't more actively pursuing one of the game's best shortstops, considering he'd fill a position of need for the team. What's worse, Story signing with the Red Sox only stands to make the Yankees' run through the division even more difficult.

The Rays, Red Sox, and Blue Jays all figure to be in the playoff hunt this season, and the lack of offseason activity from the Yankees has some fans worried they're getting left behind.

There's still time for the Yankees to make a move or two before the regular season gets underway, but with the rest of the division improving quickly, New York could find itself getting left behind in the division. Boone doesn't seem too worried about it, but a slow start could be damaging for the Yankees' season outlook.
