Although Luis Severino is not pitching for the New York Mets in the Subway Series against the New York Yankees this week, it is the first time that the two teams have played since he left the Bronx for Queens in free agency, and he spoke about his Yankees tenure with the media before Wednesday's game.

“I mean for me, I gave everything that I have, I mean I was not looking to get injured,” Luis Severino said, via Yankees Videos on X. “I was just trying to compete. And the thing is like I got hurt playing baseball. I was not outside going on a motorcycle, freaking diving out of a helicopter something like that. I was playing baseball. And I gave everything that I got to the Yankees. At the end there is no hard feelings, I love the Yankees. I love the guys out there, and I'm here because they gave me an opportunity to be somebody. You know, I went out there and gave my 100 percent.”

Severino came up through the ranks with the Yankees organization and made his debut in 2015. He was viewed as the ace of the staff starting in 2017 due to his performance, and he was dominant until late-2018. Following that, Severino struggled with injuries after signing a contract that bought out his arbitration years with the Bombers. In 2019, Severino missed significant time before returning late, eventually becoming part of the postseason rotation.

In 2020, Severino discovered that he needed Tommy John surgery, and there were multiple injuries that delayed his return in 2021, including one to the groin. Late in 2021, he joined the Yankees bullpen to help them sneak into the wild card. Then in 2022, Severino got off to a good start, but still missed significant time before returning late in the year and once again pitching in the playoffs.

In his last year in pinstripes, Severino disappointed in 2023. At that point, it was viewed by many that he needed a change of scenery. Now, he is having a resurgent season with a Mets team that is hot after a rough start to the year.

Luis Severino rebounding with Mets in 2024

So far this season, Severino has pitched to a 3.29 ERA in 15 starts, going for 90.1 innings overall, according to FanGraphs. Given that he signed a one-year deal with the Mets in the offseason, this sets him up to get a decent deal in the upcoming offseason if he keeps this up without getting hurt.

Severino is coming off of a solid outing against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday Night Baseball, in which he went for six shutout innings in a Mets win.

The Mets as a whole will try to get back to .500 overall with a win over the Yankees on Wednesday at Citi Field.
