The Kansas City Chiefs have had an interesting offseason to say the least. They were able to apply the franchise tag to one of their better players in tackle Orlando Brown Jr., a key move that prioritized the protection of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs' next big offseason move was to sign wide receiver JuJu Smith Schuster in free agency, which gave the franchise yet another weapon for Mahomes to throw to. With Smith Schuster, tight end Travis Kelce, and star Tyreek Hill, many expected the Chiefs to have one of the better three-headed monsters in their offensive attack. However, Kansas City shockingly traded Hill after the two parties couldn't come to terms on a contract extension. The Chiefs' haul in the Hill trade included five picks, one of which is a first-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Chiefs went on to sign free agent wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling, a move that helps infuse speed into the offense after Hill's departure.

However, Kansas City shouldn't be content, as holes remain on the offense and the defense. With two draft picks and some money left to spend in free agency, the Chiefs can still fill in some of the holes that remain on the roster. Here are two moves the Chiefs must make.

2 Moves The Chiefs Must Make

2. Sign Arden Key

This isn't a flashy move by any means. The casual NFL fan might not even know who Arden Key is. The 25-year-old is a former third round pick out of LSU who was drafted back in 2018 by the Las Vegas Raiders. Key was a disappointment in his first two seasons in the NFL, as he totaled just three sacks in that span. He signed a one-year, prove-it deal with the San Francisco 49ers and quietly put together the best year of his career with the franchise, tallying 6.5 sacks while appearing in all 17 games. Key earned a very solid 79.4 pass rushing grade from Pro Football Focus and was a key part of the 49ers' rotation of defensive ends. The free agent pass rusher reportedly has a visit with Kansas City planned for Friday. Key was more adept at rushing the passer than stopping the run, so he likely fits as more of a rotational rusher on passing downs. It seems like he has yet to scratch the surface of what he can become, which is an exciting prospect for whoever ends up signing him this offseason during the remaining period of free agency.

1. Draft defenders with each first-round pick

In a wide receiver-heavy draft, the Chiefs could opt to use one of their first-round picks on a wide receiver. However, they would be better off using both picks to improve a defense that collapsed late in the playoffs this past season. If Kansas City is unable to bring in a veteran pass rusher, they could look to the likes of George Karlaftis, who has been mocked to Kansas City by some pundits. There is also no shortage of talent in this year's draft when it comes to the defensive line. Perhaps one area where the Chiefs really need to pounce is the cornerback position, as Kansas City lost Charvarius Ward and Mike Hughes this offseason. Someone like Andrew Booth Jr. or Dax Hill would help provide some stability to the back end of the Chiefs' secondary. The Chiefs have an opportunity to really infuse some young talent into their defense with two first-round picks following the Hill trade. They need to take advantage of that.
