The Denver Broncos utilized the 2022 NFL Draft to address some holes on their roster. But to some, the draft was only seen as decent, and there are still some moves that should be made to help round out the roster before training camp begins. Here are 3 moves the Broncos should consider making.

3 Moves the Broncos Must Make After 2022 NFL Draft to Complete Roster

Re-sign LB Alexander Johnson

Following the conclusion of the 2021 season, the Broncos chose to let linebackers AJ Johnson and Kenny Young become free agents. Josey Jewell and Johnson both suffered torn pectorals that kept them on the sidelines for a majority of the season. With the loss of the starting linebackers, GM George Paton acquired Young in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams that included sending Von Miller to the Los Angeles.

Young performed extremely well in the absence of Johnson and Jewell. Fans were left disappointed when the team let Young walk after the conclusion of the season. Re-signing Young would have been one of the moves the team needed to make, but the Las Vegas Raiders signed Young on May 9th.

As it stands right now, the Broncos are placing their trust in Jewell and free-agent acquisition Alex Singleton. Singleton is a journeyman linebacker whose success has mostly come on special teams. The team also has youngsters Jonas Griffith and Barron Browning, who have both shown some promise.

Johnson still finds himself wading around the free-agent pool, and he would be a nice option for the team to sign back at a low price. He has worked alongside Jewell, and it would be better to sign him now rather than risking another team to snagging him.

Sign free agent center J.C. Tretter

The Broncos have relied heavily on center Lloyd Cushenberry since he was drafted in 2020. Per PFF, Cushenberry was given a middle-of-the-road grade of 64.2. He also is tied for 1st in allowing the most sacks (5) during the 2021 season. There is definitely some room for improvement in Cushenberry's game.

It wouldn't hurt the Broncos to sign a veteran center, who despite having injuries here and there, has performed significantly better than Cushenberry. Per PFF, free-agent center JC Tretter was given a 78.7 grade for the 2021 season. Tretter also allowed only 1 sack for the entire season. Given how often the Broncos were reshuffling the offensive line due to injuries, the team should look into signing the veteran center to a low-risk, one or two-year contract. Russell Wilson was relentlessly sacked while with the Seattle Seahawks. The Broncos should definitely look more into keeping him protected behind a sturdy offensive line.

Sign free agent DT Akiem Hicks

As it stands right now, Mike Purcell is the Broncos' starting defensive tackle. He is backed up by DeShawn Williams and rookie Eyioma Uwazurike. Purcell suffered injuries throughout the 2021 season, and also had some less-than-stellar showings in games. Purcell was given a 64.3 grade from PFF and recorded no sacks on the season. As a starting defensive tackle, stats like that will not suffice.

The Broncos defense performed decent enough stopping the run, ranking 15th in total rush yards allowed. However, this is the NFL, where decent will only get you so far. The Broncos looked to address some defensive tackle depth by drafting Uwazurike. The team should look into signing a veteran for the position as well.

Akiem Hicks will be 33 once the 2022 season starts. He isn't on the same level that he was earlier in his career, but he could still provide some depth and be a helpful pairing alongside Purcell. Hicks had a better PFF grade than Purcell last season at 72.3. He also recorded 5 sacks. Hicks signed a large 4-year contract worth $48 million in 2017, and he is reportedly looking for another big contract. This cost might price the Broncos out of contention for Hicks, but it wouldn't hurt to inquire with Hicks' agent about a more affordable, short-term deal.
