Consistency is a word NFL front offices love to throw around when discussing what their ideal candidates are for their head coach. But for the Jacksonville Jaguars, they would not get more consistent with their next head coaching hire than grabbing Doug Pederson.

The former Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach is set to rejoin the coaching ranks after having sat out the 2021 NFL season after being fired, and he brings the most experience to whatever team he joins this offseason.

For the Jaguars, their disaster called Urban Meyer ended unceremoniously, and now Jacksonville is back to square one in trying to turn their franchise’s fortunes around. With franchise QB Trevor Lawrence now in the fold, it is imperative that the next head coach is able to connect with Lawrence and establish a relationship with him so he can justify his number one overall selection.

3 Reasons why Doug Pederson should be Jacksonville's next head coach

3. Experience and respect

Pederson is very well aware that he is one of the better candidates available for a job this offseason, meaning he should make sure that he holds out until the best situation arises. And that best situation does not necessarily mean the most money, because basing your comfortability in a situation around how much you are being paid backfired for both the Las Vegas Raiders and the Jaguars recently.

The type of experience that Pederson has as a head-coaching candidate is impressive, especially when considering his Super Bowl victory with the Eagles back in 2018. What Pederson did with that team, overcoming losing their starting QB and having made their way through a vaunted postseason field, is something that speaks for itself in the interview process.

2. QB-focused approach

As a former NFL QB himself, Pederson understands the intricacies that go into manning that position. When he had Carson Wentz and Nick Foles as his QBs for the championship team, Pederson was able to right the ship and keep the team focused, and that was in large part due to making sure his QB room was optimizing their every move.

If Pederson earns the chance to work with Lawrence, then this will be a great opportunity for the second-year pro to not only have an open set of ears for listening but to more importantly show his new coach what he is capable of and what type of a QB he is. Especially in this day and age of the NFL, establishing a healthy two-way conversation between coach and franchise QB is crucial to the entire team’s success, and these two will can easily establish that from day one.

1. Proven winner with a patient approach

Being aware of the situation has helped keep Pederson on his toes and able to adapt to any situation, which will help set him up for success in Jacksonville, especially with how rocky the road will be in the beginning.

Experience and a winning past can only get someone so far, but a coach that has proven himself in tough situations and in handling adversity will go a long way, making Pederson the perfect candidate to take over.

Ownership tends to lean towards taking the patient approach amongst crucial decisions, and with Pederson being one of the safest choices on the market, that patient approach can help provide Pederson with an attack plan of a few seasons to carry out what will help turn this team’s fortunes around.
