San Francisco 49ers star Elijah Mitchell's status is “unclear” after needing surgery on a broken finger Tuesday. This is according to NBC Sports reporter Matt Maiocco.

Maiocco added to this tweet, reporting that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan does not know when Mitchell injured his finger and was not made aware of the injury until this morning.

It is unclear how or when Mitchell fractured his finger, and it is unknown how this will affect his availability going forward. However, according to PFT, Shanahan expressed that he is “hopeful that Mitchell will be able to play through the injury this week.”

Elijah Mitchell has been a huge portion of the 49ers' offense in his first year. The rookie now has three rushing touchdowns, an average of 80 rushing yards each game, and a total of 633 offensive yards so far this season. In Monday's Monday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, Mitchell led his team in rushing yards with 91 yards.

After the upset win against the Rams 31-10, the 49ers are now sitting at a mediocre record of 4-5. Despite the win, they are still three games behind the Rams in the standings. Both teams trail the 8-2 Arizona Cardinals, who were previously undefeated until losing their latest two games without quarterback Kyler Murray.

It's a shot in the dark whether or not Mitchell will join the 49ers on Sunday when they travel to Jacksonville to take on the 2-7 Jaguars.
