The most interesting matchup for the San Francisco 49ers this season isn't against rival Los Angeles Rams. It's the ongoing kerfuffle on who will start at quarterback between veteran Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance.

The issue has been debated throughout the offseason but 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has largely remained coy about his decision, choosing to keep his cards close to his chest. Garoppolo, however, wasn't as shy on Wednesday. The two-time Super Bowl champion hinted that he will start for the 49ers against the Detroit Lions on Sunday (via ESPN).

“I told you guys a long time ago I had a pretty good feeling about it. I kind of joked about it but I always kind of knew where I stood and everything and now it's official, I guess.”

The job of the 29-year-old Garoppolo got threatened after the 49ers selected Lance as the third overall pick in the NFL Draft. The 21-year-old starred at North Dakota State and looks ready to become a prime signal-caller in the NFL. But perhaps it's not yet his time. Or at least according to Garoppolo, who's been irked by the repeated inquires of reporters on the 49ers' QB situation.

“I feel like all you guys have got to do is look at how I've talked since July 27. I almost wish I wasn't hard-headed with it but I feel like you guys have been a little hard-headed and keep asking. I feel like I've already answered it. So, I'll keep it at that.”

The 49ers, whether it's Garoppolo or Lance starting, should not only focus on their quarterback quandary if they want to bounce back from their dismal campaign last season.
