San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch leaned on advice from current Denver Broncos general manager John Elway prior to taking on his new role.

Lynch was hired as the 49ers GM last year, which marked his first front office job in the NFL.

So, in order to prepare himself for the rigors ahead, he went to an old friend in Elway to try to learn more on the ins and outs of the high-pressure position.

And the advice from Elway helped Lynch feel much more confident about the challenges he would face in San Francisco.

From Arnie Stapleton of The Associated Press:

“Yeah, he’s been awesome. He’s a great friend and he exposed me to the business,” Lynch said. “I think the biggest thing, when I had this opportunity presented to me really quickly and had a short, finite time to give them an answer, he kind of gave me the confidence: ‘You know what, you can do this, just like anything else. You can be great at it.’ And hearing that from him kind of emboldened me to feel that way.”

The two will be on opposite sides this weekend when Denver travels to San Francisco for a Sunday afternoon clash at Levi's Stadium.

It's been a season of struggles for the Niners due to numerous injuries to key players, but perhaps a win over Elway's Broncos would help give the team some positive momentum entering the stretch run of the regular season.

After the game against Denver, San Francisco will wrap up the season with tough tests against the Seatle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, and Los Angeles Rams.
