Major League Baseball may not have seen the last of Bartolo Colon just yet.

Fans and even Boomer Esiason have been calling for the New York Mets to sign Colon to a free agent deal. This comes as the current NL East leaders are without multiple starting pitchers due to injury, including Max Scherzer (strained oblique).

When asked on Twitter about what Colon has been up to, z101 Digital’s Hector Gomez noted that the one-time AL Cy Young Award winner is “hoping” to receive another opportunity to pitch for the Mets.

Colon has not featured in the majors since his stint with the Texas Rangers in the 2018 campaign, where he logged a 5.78 ERA in 146.1 innings pitched. The velocity on his four-seam fastball averaged at 89.5 mph, as opposing hitters hit .250 off of the pitch over the season.

Even as he was well into his 40s, Colon did not throw in the towel on his professional baseball career after his run with the Rangers. He later signed with Dominican Republic side Aguilas Cibaenas, which was then followed up by a one-season run with the Acereros de Monclova of the Mexican League in the Norte Division.

Colon did recently note that he “believes” his baseball career is over, as he plans to “dedicate time for his family.” However, the 48-year-old will soon make a return to Citi Field, as he is slated to join multiple other former Mets fan favorites for Old Timers’ Day on Aug. 27.

From his memorable home run against the San Diego Padres to his stout performances over the Mets’ run to the World Series in 2015, Colon sure had quite a tenure with the NL East powerhouse.
