The Chicago Bears head coaching rumor mill is scalding hot. Washington Commanders' assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is the latest name to join the list of potential replacements for embattled Bears coach Matt Eberflus. CBS Sports' Josina Anderson broke the news in a social media post Tuesday morning.

Bieniemy joins other big names like Michigan's Jim Harbaugh on the list of those considered by the Bears' top brass.

53-year-old Eberflus took the Bears' head coaching job in January of 2022. Under his tenure, the team has remained among the worst in the NFL. He's compiled just a 7-22 record through 29 games, which includes a franchise-high 14-game losing streak.

Bienemy has been mentioned as a candidate for nearly every NFL head coaching vacancy since his tenure as offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs. This stint resulted in two Super Bowl titles.

He is in his first season with the Commanders and has had mixed results in Washington. The Commanders have scored 261 points through 13 games, a 20.07 points per game average that ranks 17th among the NFL's 32 teams.

The Bears enter this week's game against the Detroit Lions with 16.5% of their offensive drives ending in a turnover this season, third worst in the NFL behind only the Las Vegas Raiders (16.8%) and Minnesota Vikings (18.3%).

“You know the season didn't start the way everybody wanted, for sure,” Eberflus told reporters Monday. “But over the last eight weeks, we've put some good things out there. We're certainly excited about doing that this week. Our focus is — as any time in the NFL — is where your feet are. We've got to be focused on this game and this game only to put your best foot forward out there, and that's what we're doing this week.”
