As the Chicago Bears look to win their second game in a row in Week 8, quarterback Justin Fields doesn't appear ready to make his return. However, the Bears could be seeing the return of one of their more intriguing running backs.

Head coach Matt Eberflus said, “it looks real good,” when describing Roschon Johnson's chances of practicing on Wednesday. He has been out the past few weeks with a concussion. While Johnson still has, “one more hurdle,” to climb, he appears to be nearing a return to game action.

When the Bears reconstructed their offense this offseason, rookie Roschon Johnson was expected to play a major role. Chicago had lost David Montgomery to the Detroit Lions in free agency and were looking for a spark in the running back room. His concussion hasn't allowed Johnson to grab true reign of Chicago's running back hierarchy.

Before going down however, Johnson had 25 rushes for 122 yards and a touchdown. In his absence, D'Onta Foreman has taken on a bigger role in the offense. He scored three touchdowns in Chicago's Week 7 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. However, Foreman is a free agent this offseason.

The Bears have Khalil Herbert on their roster. He has shined at times, averaging 5.3 yards per game. However, he is a free agent after 2024 and has never received 130+ carries in a season. Perhaps Chicago doesn't envision him as their long-term RB1.

This season, Roschon Johnson will be looking to find his footing in the NFL. A strong performance could convince the Bears he is the future at the RB position. Nearing full health, he'll have an opportunity to return to the field and prove himself once again.
