After catching one of the final seats in the 2020 NFC playoffs, the Chicago Bears will be expecting a different outcome as they are set to miss the postseason this time around. Currently holding a 4-10 record through Week 15, Matt Nagy and his team will end up with a losing season in 2021 as they have failed to replicate or even exceed last year's level of success.

Admittedly, one of the major reasons for their struggles is their quarterback situation as rookie QB Justin Fields is still going through some growing pains in getting acclimated to the pro league. Despite his inconsistencies, the blame can't be solely put on the shoulders of the 22-year-old as the Bears have clear holes to fill on their roster. Chicago's secondary defense as well as its offensive line needs more depth but the quality of their receivers should be addressed the most in order to give Fields the best chance to succeed with his team next season.

As of the moment, the Bears do not have a pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft as they previously traded it away to the New York Giants in order to move up and select Fields last year. The earliest that they will be picking will be in the second round wherein they can potentially target Purdue WR David Bell to contribute to their rebuilding cause.

He is a three-year letterman who just recently concluded an impressive campaign for the Boilermakers. His numbers dipped in his sophomore year last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic but Bell redeemed himself as he notched 1,286 yards on 37 receptions and two touchdowns in 2021. He emerged as a key player for the Boilermakers' offense and allowed them to garner an 8-4 overall record for the fourth spot in the Big Ten West.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Bell is arguably one of the best pass-catchers in college football this season. His smooth route-running abilities as well as his capability to use his size to his advantage have allowed him to be a major threat whenever he's on the field. He also possesses good ball skills which enable him to catch hard passes and make plays deep in the endzone.

Perhaps the biggest room for improvement in Bell's game would be his speed as he still lacks the explosiveness that his counterparts in Jahan Dotson and Jameson Williams have. If he manages to work on this aspect of his game then Fields will surely have a dangerous weapon at his disposal in the future.

Currently, the incoming draft class will have notable wide receivers that are expected to go in the first round which includes Arkansas' Treylon Burks and Ohio State's Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave. Bell will probably fall in the second round which will give the Bears a realistic chance to land him with their highest selection in the upcoming draft.

Clearly, the Purdue product won't be anywhere near the level of former Pro Bowl receiver Allen Robinson right off the bat. However, after the Bears failed to agree to terms on a long-term contract extension with the veteran, it is already expected that he will suit up for a new team for the 2022 season. Taking a gamble on Bell could be a viable option for the Bears since they will have a promising player that can play on a cheap contract alongside Darnell Mooney for the next few years.

At this point, Matt Nagy and his squad will have to be smart with their offseason moves since there are a handful of players who are expected to ink contract extensions in the summer. Linebacker Roquan Smith, defensive tackle Akiem Hicks, and offensive lineman James Daniels are just some of the names that Chicago will need to prioritize in the offseason.

Ultimately, the Bears can find themselves in a better position to succeed if everything aligns according to plan and if they can successfully get David Bell as one of their players for the future. The receiver's level of talent as well as the potential of playing alongside another young stud in Justin Fields will certainly help in advancing the rebuilding efforts of the Bears moving forward.
