The Cincinnati Bengals had arguably the worst defense in the NFL last season. That included giving up the most yards (6,618) and averaging the third most points allowed per game (28.4).

They aren't off to a great 2019 now. Defensive tackle Christian Ringo left their first preseason game of the year against the Kansas City Chiefs with a right thumb injury.

The good news for the Cincinnati Bengals and Christian Ringo is that the injury doesn't seem serious. Although “doubtful” doesn't sound good you have to remember that diagnosis is for his return to that particular game.

With that in mind, Ringo being “doubtful” to return to the game means there was a chance he would. If there was a chance he would return to that game, he'll likely be more than fine to return to practice and participate in the next game.

The bad news for Ringo is that he's trying to carve out a role. He likely won't be a starter on the team to begin the year. However, he could definitely be in a solid position to get a lot of time as a swing backup. He can fill in at any spot on the defensive line.

Of course, that can't happen if Ringo is injured and missing time in the preseason. He'll need to prove that he's deserving of that role. It is hard to do that if he isn't playing.

Ringo was a sixth-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2015. He didn't show much in the following years but did post career-high marks in tackles (10) and sacks (1.5) last season. The 27-year-old was certainly trying to build off that; this definitely isn't the start he was hoping for.

Hopefully, Christian Ringo is okay and can be back in the lineup for the Cincinnati Bengals in their next preseason game.
