The Kansas City Chiefs have a proud history and have won a combined three Super Bows and pre-Super Bowl AFL Championships. Over the years the Chiefs have made some big draft picks that have changed their franchise forever. Let's break down the five best draft picks in Chiefs history.

5. Will Shields, 1993, Round 3, Pick 74

Will Shields was drafted in the third round of the 1993 draft after having a standout career with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Shields continued that great offensive line play with the Chiefs and he was durable playing in 223 straight games. Shields played on some of the best offensive lines in the team's history. He was one of the main reasons that Priest Holmes had such big holes to run through. In two seasons in 2002 and 2003, Holmes rushed for 3,035 yards and 48 touchdowns.

4. Travis Kelce, 2013, Round 3, Pick 74

Travis Kelce is the first current Chiefs player that is on this list. Kelce was drafted in the third round of the 2013 draft, and has been a standout with the team since then.

In his short career, Kelce has already been named to five Pro bowls, two All-Pro teams, and one Super Bowl Championship. In 2018 Kelce couldn't be slowed down by anyone, catching 103 passes for 1,336 yards and 10 touchdowns. If he stays on the Chiefs, there is no reason when he retires why he can't move up a few spots.

3. Tony Gonzalez, 1997, Round 1, Pick 13

Tony Gonzalez is one of the best tight ends in NFL history, and his time with the Chiefs was filled with lots of success. Gonzalez played 12 seasons with the Chiefs, catching 916 passes for 10,940 yards and 76 touchdowns.

His best season was in 2004 when he caught 102 passes for 1,258 yards and seven touchdowns. In his entire career, Gonzalez was named an All-Pro six times, the Pro Bowl 14 times, and his bust now sits in Canton, Ohio in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

2. Derrick Thomas, 1989, Round 1, Pick 4

Derrick Thomas is one of the best players in Chiefs history, and also one of the most popular. As a rookie with the Chiefs, Thomas started all 16 games and had ten sacks. That was just the start of a great career, that saw him finish with 126.5 sacks. Thomas was named to eight Pro Bowls and was inducted into the team Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2009, Thomas was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

1. Patrick Mahomes, 2017, Round 1, Pick 10

When Patrick Mahomes was selected in the first round of the 2017 draft and many were left scratching their head. At the time, the Chiefs had Alex Smith and it looked like he still had some good years left in the league. After spending most of the first season behind Smith, Mahomes was a standout in 2018 and 19.

Slowing down Mahomes has been near impossible but the thing that puts him number one on this list is pretty simple: he led the team to the Super Bowl.

During the 2019 playoffs, the Chiefs had issues getting out to fast starts. But Mahomes led the team back in every game, and hoisted the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the season.
